 CAN YOU HELP "BEAR"?

DOG

DOG

This handsome fella (we call him Bear) showed up at our house last week (07/17/2007) and he seemed to be looking for a home.  He has a choke collar but no tags.  We tried to find the owner but had no success so we called Animal Control and had him picked up.  We called Animal Control this week and they said that no one claimed him so they were going to have to put him to sleep.  We thought that he was just too nice a dog for that so we rescued him from the pound.  However, with four dogs of our own we feel that we just can't keep him and we'd like to help him find a nice home!  We've tried placing him in a no-kill shelter but no shelter with 100 miles of us has room for him.  He seems to be a black lab mix with possibly some pit bull mixed in.  We think he's a young dog but not a puppy.  He hasn't been neutered yet! He's a bit of a handful at about 75 pounds and strong as an ox but I think that he has a lot of potential!  He shows absolutely no sign of aggressiveness and he's very friendly!  Since we haven't had him completely checked out yet so we haven't let him in with our other dogs but they seemed to get along okay when he first showed up and tried to socialize with them through the chain-link fence.  If you or anyone you know can take him and would offer him a good home please contact us as soon as possible!

UPDATE (07/28/2007)  To make matters worse, we just took him to the vet's to have him checked out and he tested positive for heartworms!  It's in the early stages so there are no visible symptoms but he needs treatment as soon as possible.  The vet has confirmed that he's probably about two years old and says that he's in very good health other than the heartworms!  My vet charges over $200.00 for the treatment and that's more than I can afford!  If anyone can offer any advice or help we'd really appreciate it.

UPDATE (08/01/2007)  Bear is back at Christian County Animal Control and I'm sorry to say that he'll be put down on Friday morning if nobody rescues hime by 4:00 Thursday afternoon!  (The animal control people are pretty good to work with so if you can't get there by 4:00 P.M. call them and they'll probably hold Bear until you can pick him up.   I've gotten promises to help pay for his treatment and transport to a new home if someone will rescue him!  If you're not in the central Illinois area but would like to rescue Bear please contact me and I'll make arrangements to get him to you!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

UPDATE (08/02/2007) SOME GOOD NEWS!  Thanks to a couple of great people at the vet's office we've got more help for Bear!  (Thank you, Gina & Seth!)  They have arranged with animal control to hold Bear until Monday and also have arranged a generous grant from a Humane Society to help with Bear's care and treatment!  We still need more help so if you can do anything Bear would really appreciate it.  If you still want to contribute towards his treatment and care please send a donation to the vet's office:

Animal Kingdom
559 S. Washington St
Taylorville IL  62568.

Please either enclose a note or mark the check for Bear!  If Animal Kingdom receives more donations than they need for Bear they will donate any excess back to the Humane Society in Shelby County.

Of course, Bear still needs a permanent loving, caring home so if you can help with that please contact either me or Gina at Animal Kingdom!

I'll keep working here on a permanent solution and I hope that you all do, too!

Thanks, and God bless all of you for caring!

UPDATE (08/09/2007)  GREAT NEWS!  Thanks to the people at Animal Kingdom, the Shelby County Humane Society, and others Bear now has a new chance at a happy life!  We've had the promise of the heartworm treatment and found someone who will take him into a loving, caring home!  Thanks to all who helped with the and may God bless you!
